As the name implies, Mexican beer originated in Mexico though it gained wide acceptance globally, primarily with Mexican lagers in the United States since the early 1980s where lighter beer became especially popular. Mexico remains one of the world's largest producers of these lighter style pilsners and lagers. Mexican cerveza and pilsners are now also common Mexican beer types distributed to stores and other establishments worldwide under flagship brands as well as craft brewery names.

There are three (3) main style classifications of Mexican beers: lagers, pilsners and cerveza, each with distinct brewing ingredients and processes. Darker lagers have also become favorites in the Mexican beer category. The influence of many Austrian and German styles though can still be found in Mexican beers.

First off, Mexican lagers are just the countries version of the standard lager style of beer. The lager style represents some of the most approachable, easy-drinking beer styles available. Easy-drinking pale Lagers are the beer that is most closely associated with the term "lager," with visions of this ice cold yellow-gold beer planted firmly in people's consciousness through television and print advertising. This is what many of the Mexican lagers available today represent.

Mexican lagers are largely influenced by Vienna Austria-style lager and are brewed in light (pale), amber, and dark (negro/negra) varieties using cold-fermenting, but often use Mexican yeast, adding distinct notes. These beers can pair with hearty dishes, like Mexican cuisine and spicy meat dishes including chicken, sausage, and pork.

Pilsners are a type of lager, so this category is a sub-set of Mexican lagers that stands all on its own. Mexican pilsners are generally a type of pale lager, with a taste that is crisp, clean, and balanced but still retains some of the hops over other Mexican styles of beer like cerveza. Mexican pilsners are a beer that can pair with virtually any kind of food, from light fares to fried foods to spicy entrees.

The third type, or style, of Mexican beer is commonly described as cerveza (Spanish for "beer"), a crisp and light brew that's often made with a pilsner malt, flaked corn and less noticeable hops than a true Mexican pilsner.

Since Mexican cervezas are so crisp and light, they practically pair with any kind of food, but are the perfect style of beer to "wash down" foods like grilled meats and barbeque, fried foods and meats, noodle dishes, and more.

When shopping for a dark Mexican beer, look for "Negra" or "Negro" in the name, which both translate in Spanish to mean "dark." One example is Modelo Negra, a dark lager you may find great for washing down spicy food.

This is completely up to the imbiber. Some beer drinkers love to throw a lime into the bottle, while others believe it is completely unnecessary. The best option to find out if you will like a Mexican beer with a lime is to try it for yourself, both with and without a lime, and see which you prefer!

The beer is only 3.6%, so it qualifies as a mid strength. It is a bright gold beer with a very light crisp taste. For those back in Australia, the best comparison would be a (much) lighter version of Carlton draught.

There is a distinct aroma of sweet, lightly roasted malt, with a hint of hop at the end, and the flavor is the same. The smoothness of this beverage is light and watery, and it finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, and extremely drinkable. Light beers are more similar to lagers than regular beers. Although there have been no glitches, there have been no discernible notes.

In 1871, Pedro Fernández returned to his family home at Hacienda Santa Ana after studying engineering in France, where he learned about the process of making fine brandy and cognac. Applying what he had learned, hestarted to develop a rum recipe. By 1880, the formula was perfected. To this day, 140 years later, nothing about it has changed. Its still aged anda blended in the same way and in the same place. Not even thebottles label has changed.

Contrary to popular belief, hard liquor can go bad. It doesn't turn into vinegar like wine does, nor cloudy, bacteria-laden poison like beer, but if you leave a small amount of liquor in a bottle for too long it will lose its flavor and end up tasting kinda dusty. Being capricious and forgetful, I have let many a bottle go down this road, and my latent attachment issues just won't let me throw the damn things out (at least not the rare ones). "But its not even good anymore!" I tell myself. "Yeah, but I can't get anymore!" It's bad for my mental health, and frankly, scads of nearly empty liquor bottles don't really fit the decorating scheme. Thankfully, one of the oldest of my precious garbage bottles has now hit the recycling bin, porque Ron del Barrilito esta aqui!

I, too, was turned onto this rum by a friend from Puerto Rico. My first taste was the three star. I didn't even know rum came aged, much less 6-10 years! Stunning stuff. Daggers to anyone who even thinks of mixing this stuff with anything. Just this Saturday, my friend brought me another bottle of the three star along with a bottle of the two star, which is excellent, as well. It's "only" aged three years or more. Would not suggest mixing this one, either. I did try it with ice, though. Very, very nice. Funny thing is, the three star is like $20 at the airport in PR. Everywhere I've seen it listed on the web is at least $37-$40. SCORE for ME! 041b061a72
