Laser Printer. While there are some special MICR printers that use ribbons, we will assume you don't have access to one of them. So you must use a laser printer to print MICR encoded checks. Why do you have to have a laser printer? MICR encoding must be printed with a special magnetic "ink". (This is a legal requirement imposed by the Federal Reserve Board.) This special magnetic "ink" is only available for laser printers. You must purchase special laser printer toner cartridges that contain magnetic particles. The standard toner cartridges that come with your laser printer will not work. As of 1/2022 no one has released a magnetic ink for inkjet printers.


So how do you select a laser printer for MICR encoding? First, locate firms that make magnetic toner cartridges. See what printers match their toner cartridges. Then select a printer that matches the available toner cartridges. In general, HP and Lexmark are good choice. Others may work as well.


Magnetic Toner. The MICR line on checks must be printed using magnetic toner. This special toner is only available for laser printers (and some special dot matrix printers.) Inkjet printers can not print MICR! In general, your printer manufacturer will not sell this special toner. (The market for it is to small.) MICR printers use special MICR ink and toner to print the numbers found on the bottom of both personal checks and business checks. Many financial institutions use MICR check printers or magnetic ink printers to mitigate check fraud and to ensure overall financial security. These printers use magnetic ink to print the MICR line on checks.


There are two types of MICR toner: Originally Manufactured and Remanufactured MICR Toner. Assuming the magnetic ink or toner cartridges are originally manufactured (as opposed to refilled or remanufactured), then both kinds of cartridges would meet ANSI (ansi.org) standards for check printing.


Magnetic ink for checks is designed to work in tandem with requirements set by the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve and all banks require that checks be printed with MICR ink or toner for ease of check processing. As a check travels through the check clearing system, it passes through reader-sorters which send a magnetic charge to the check, allowing the machine to read the information contained within the MICR line.


Checks that are printed with magnetic ink are easily identified by scanners equipped with MICR read heads. This allows checks to be processed securely, instantaneously, and with a high degree of accuracy.


Around that time, the Stanford Research Institute was hard at work crafting their Electronic Recording Method of Accounting, also known as ERMA. Commissioned by Bank of America, the project sought to find a solution to the large influx of checks being processed by hand. By September of 1955, the same team created magnetic ink character recognition as part of its ERMA initiative project and had promising results.


MICR ink bridges the gap between humans and computer communication. Magnetic ink can be read by computers instantaneously through its hidden magnetic language, similar to barcodes. In addition, MICR fonts also resemble physical numeric characters which humans can easily read.


Underneath the surface of every character printed with MICR ink lies a hidden magnetic code that is indecipherable to the human eye. Magnetic ink contains iron oxide particles that are magnetically charged when printed.


Instead of interpreting the entire character as a whole, a MICR reader reads four separate magnetic charges to decode which corresponding number is being inputted. Each character holds two positive and two negative magnetic charges along the linear track.


It is normal to be skeptical over a security process that was implemented in the late 50s. Although the magnetic ink character recognition was developed decades ago, it had over 60-years to improve and continuously push its own protection limits to form the high-security version of MICR we have today.
